Like peas and carrots

I know I've been blogging a lot lately.  But there's so many interesting things that happen on the farm I just have to share.
So yesterday we went out to run some errands.  When we got home a few hours later we heard the goats baahh-ing.  We went to check on them and lo and behold Peas got his head stuck in between the gates.  He couldn't get his head out!  Hahaha.  And it appeared that Carrots was by his side the whole time keeping Peas company.

I think if Peas could talk he would probably say, "what are you standing there for?!  Hurry up and help me get my head unstuck!"

Never a dull moment

When you live on a farm there's never a dull moment.  There's always something happening.

This morning at 4:45 I was awaken by hubby.  He was making a lot of noises so I woke up to see what he was doing.

He was awaken by a yelp and followed by a distressed baahhh from the goats.  When he looked out the window he saw a pair of red eyes.  So he went to get his flash light so he could look at it better to see what it was in our yard.  But by the time he got back with his flash light the animal was gone.  So we went outside to check on the goats to make sure they were still alive.  When we went outside the goats were gone and one of the gates was wide open.  The goats must have gotten scared and gotten out of the yard.  So we went looking for them luckily they were very close by just hanging out right by the pigs but looked a little shaken. So we lured them back to the front yard area with food.

We believe it was a coyote that was in our yard but can't be for sure.  So by the time we were done putting the goats back and checking to see if there's any coyotes hanging around and went back inside and it was already 5:30...and at 6 is when we usually get up to get the kids ready for school.  I think I'll probably need a nap today!

The interesting thing about this incident is who left the gate open?  I know I didn't, my hubby didn't, the kids swear up and down they didn't.  I remember in the scripture somewhere that says the lord watches over you and watches over your flocks at night.  I think that's exactly what happened!  If the gate was not open the goats might not have been able to escape and might have gotten eaten by the coyote.

I really don't think these goats are smart enough to open
this gate on their own and manage to get out

Hubby went fishing by the river late afternoon today and
found this huge
paw print...very well could be the coyotes'

Does anyone know what kind of paw print this is???  Is that a bob cat or coyote?  Or something else?

The people have spoken

This is a continuation of the last post, Name That Goat.  The results are in!

Thanks to all the help from everyone, the top two picks for the goat names are:
1.  Bonny and Clyde
2.  Peas and Carrots

After a careful examination and discussion by our judge panel (AKA the kids), we have decided to go with Peas and Carrots.

Yup, the final answer is Peas and Carrots.

Thanks again for everyone who helped with this.

Update on the runaway dog

So here's an update on our missing dog. Here's a continuation of the great story of the world traveling dog!  Seriously, the story didn't just end with we picked him up this morning, the end!  I can seriously write a book about his "journey"!

We spent about an hour or so this morning putting up Lost Dog posters around the subdivision where the dog was last seen.  As we were driving home from doing that we got a call from the animal shelter.  They told us that someone found the dog and they were at the animal shelter with the dog.  So we made a detour and headed to the animal shelter.  When we got there we were thinking we were just going to go in there, pick up the dog, then just go home and live happily ever after.  Oh no, we have a good story going, we can't just stop here!  We were told that the person who was there with the dog didn't want to just leave the dog there at the animal shelter, so he took the dog home with him in a town about 15 miles south from where the dog was last seen yesterday.  But the animal shelter provided us with the phone number of this kind person (we shall call him nice guy for the purpose of this post) so we were able to contact him and make arrangements to pick up the dog.

We finally got a hold of this person and he told us how he came to find the dog.  So apparently there was another person that found the dog yesterday close to the elementary school where the dog was last seen.  But they didn't call the animal shelter or anything they just tied him to a light pole.  So nice guy drove by and saw the dog tied to the light pole so he rescued the dog and took him back to his apartment close to the above mentioned elementary school.  Since he couldn't really keep the dog in his apartment, he took him to his parents house in the above mentioned town.

So we were excited we finally found the dog and we were about to get the address for nice guy's parents so we can go pick up the dog.

But wait, this is one of those long-drawn movies that never ends...so here's the final twist...a few minutes after we got off the phone with nice guy he called back and said the dog escaped, once again!  We felt like we were back to ground zero again!  Now what do we do?  Put up new signs again?!

Thankfully, about 10 minutes after we received the "bad news" from nice guy, he called us back one more time and said he was driving around in his parents' neighborhood to look for the dog and he finally found him!  So this time we told nice guy not to let him out of his sight or out of his car whatsoever and that we would just meet him wherever he wanted to meet us at.

We picked a place to meet nice guy and finally able to get the dog back!  Now he's home and in our possession once again.

Whew!  What a story!  We are glad there are so many nice people out there who helped us find the dog!  And thankfully, he is finally home!!

The World Traveling dog is home at last!

Part 3

I don't have any pictures to go with this post but this is a good story, trust me.  So in between picking up the donkeys in the morning and the goats in the afternoon we went looking for our missing dog.
This is how the story goes...this morning when we went outside and calling for our dog, he didn't come to us.  He was nowhere to be found!  We looked around the property thinking maybe he was hurt or got stuck somewhere so hubby hopped on the four-wheeler and drove around the farm to look for him.  We could not find him anywhere.  So at this point we were thinking oh well, he must have been eaten by coyotes or something, I guess we will have to just go get another dog.  After all, there's an animal shelter on every corner, right?

On our way to pick up our donkeys, hubby got a phone call.  Someone actually found our dog, he was calling from a local GA (General Aviation) airport about 20 miles from where we live.  How in the world did that dog get there?  We had no idea!  Anyway, we told the guy from the airport that we were out and about and couldn't go pick up the dog right away but we would give him a call when we were on our way to pick up the dog.  In a perfect world this would have been the end of the story, happy ending, that's it, done!  But no, that can't be the end, there's got to be more!  So we were driving home from picking up the donkeys, we got another phone call from the airport guy.  He said one of his co-workers took our dog home so the dog could have a place to stay until we could go pick him up.  Again, in a perfect world the story would have ended right here!  The dog stays put, we go pick him up, done!  No, it can't stop here!  The dog was in the co-worker's backyard and he jumped a 6-ft fence and escaped, again!  Oh my gosh!  What is wrong with this dog?!  Why can't he just be normal?!  Why can't he just stay and wait for us to pick him up?!

So we contacted this co-worker lady who was kind enough to take our dog in (for a very brief moment) before the dang dog escaped.  She told us where she lived so we drove to the subdivision where she lived and started looking for the dog.  Of course, no luck, who knows where he's gonna go next?!  We talked to a couple of kids playing on the street and they said they saw the dog but didn't know where he went.  We talked to the mailman and he saw the dog and he told us where he last saw him.  He saw him last at the elementary school close by, and the dog actually attempted to get in his mail truck.  So we drove by the elementary school and I went in and talked to the ladies at the front desk.  Guess what, they all saw the dog earlier and he was playing in the playground, playing with the kids and everything!  So we drove around the streets around the school and still no sign of the dog!   Our dog is now famous, everyone in that neighborhood knows or has seen him, and know how he's been traveling around the world and doing his own thang!

As of right now, he is still MIA, but we left our phone numbers with people so I'm sure someone will eventually call us and let us know they found our dog.

I will keep everyone posted!

Part 2

As I mentioned in my earlier post today we were busy this morning picking up two donkeys.  So this afternoon we went to pick up two baby goats.  They are so cute!  They are not like baby baby goats but they are only a few months old.
They are the mini Nubian goats.  They are good for meat AND dairy (not that we will start milking them right away but maybe someday we decide to go goat milk we have that option)

They don't have names yet.

It's been such a busy day today for us!  And oh my gosh, there's a Part 3!

Here's some better pictures of them goats
They know we like Cocoa Puffs so they like leaving and
dropping us Cocoa Puffs everywhere!

The newest thing

The suspense is over!  You can stop guessing what we were "gearing up" for!  Ok so this is what we picked up this morning.  Two donkeys!  These two donkeys are actually quite calm and mellow.  They let us pet them and everything.  The people that we bought the donkeys from said they ride on the donkeys quite often.  I can't wait for the kids to come home from school and see or maybe even ride on them!

We got the donkeys for several purposes:
1. To eat down (and to keep it down) the grass in our pastures.
2. That's one of the main reasons for having the donkeys.  To keep the coyotes out.  Believe it or not donkeys look so mellow but they are very territorial and protective of the herd they will actually fight and chase any predators, like coyotes away.  One of our dogs already got kicked in the face and run off the pasture as soon as the donkeys got out of the trailer.
3. This is an added bonus.  For the kids to ride around on.

The girl already came with a name, her name is Jenny.

Hubby didn't want to bother spending time coming up
with a name so he's just calling the boy Jack (so original)

Oh wait, there's part 2!  I'll update later today.

Fixin' to fix something

When you live on a farm you are always working on something.  There's always something to fix or to build etc.  Today is no exception either.  We were trying to fix the fences in our front pasture.  Originally fixing the fences was not on our priority list but we are now gearing up for something.  But what is it?  Ha, I guess you will have to find out later.  I know the suspense is probably killing you so I'm hoping I could give an update tomorrow. Stay tuned!

fixing some fence

The area we were working in happened to be in the swampy area of the farm.
Yeah, it was kind of yucky.

Thank goodness for rain boots!

Goat dog

Have you ever heard of or seen a goat dog before?  Neither have I until recently I spotted one on our farm.  It looks like a dog but acts like a goat.  It jumps on things like the roof of a dog house and sits there like a goat would but it chases cats around.

Check out this rare sighting of a goat dog
